Reading First is a focused nationwide effort to enable all students
to become successful early readers. Reading First is authorized by Title I,
Part B, Subpart I of the Elementary and Secondary Act, as amended by the No
Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and focuses on ensuring all children will read on
or above grade level by the end of third grade.
The Division of Curriculum and Instruction has applied to the U.S. Department of
Education for a Waiver of the Tyding Amendment for the Indiana Reading First
program. This waiver will enable the Indiana Department of Education to
continue its Reading First project for one additional year and will support the
LEAs’ ability to provide coaches and materials to Reading First schools in
Indiana through direct coaching, acquisition of quality literacy materials and
timely professional development and technical assistance.
